Viva Água Movement Miringuava

The hydrographic basin of the Miringuava River is part of the hydrographic basin of the Iguaçu River, the largest river in Paraná.

It arise in the metropolitan region of Curitiba (São José dos Pinhais) and flows into the Iguaçu Falls, in Foz do Iguaçu (PR).

Currently, the Miringuava River basin is responsible for 45% of the water supply in the municipality of São José dos Pinhais (2nd largest GDP in Paraná) and is located in an agricultural production complex, with predominance of family farming.

The forecast is that, after the completion of the dam works, under the responsibility of the Companhia de Saneamento do Paraná (Sanepar), the basin will be responsible for 100% of the city’s supply, also contributing to making the surplus water available to neighboring municipalities.

For this reason, this was the region chosen for the Viva Água Movement.

As it is a long-term initiative (we are talking about 10 years), and with the involvement of several partners, the goals are bold:

  1. Reduction of the average turbidity of the basin by 30%.
  2. 50% of rural landowners in the area involved in activities that represent positive impacts, such as: sustainable agriculture, responsible tourism, impact businesses and other sustainable economic activities.
  3. Recovery of 650 hectares of strategic areas to improve water availability.
  4. Conservation of 1,500 hectares of natural areas through financial mechanisms.
  5. Conversion of 500 hectares to sustainable agriculture.
  6. Support to 30 businesses with a positive socioenvironmental impact.

TO ACHIEVE THESE OBJECTIVES, THE ACTIVITIES WERE DIVIDED INTO SIX AREAS OF ACTION:
